Native American Holocaust Experience

The Native American Holocaust was just that, a holocaust. While I was
growing up, I do not believe any of the history books recognized it
as such. I remember a series of dinner discussions as a child that
emerged from a question my older sister asked her social studies
teacher. She poignantly asked why the term holocaust was used for the
Jewish holocaust and not used when referring to what occurred to the
Native Americans. My family is Native American. The authors of this
article made no discussion of whether or not the term was most
appropriate; in fact, they began their article with this as their
premise. The authors aptly explain some of the motives behind why the
government chose to implement a re-education of Native children
through "boarding schools." The Native children were seized and
removed from their homes under the auspice of missionary programs for
educational purposes. The Native American parents of these children
were not given any choice as to whether the children were to attend,
and the "assimilation and annihilation"(p59) process began. It is
precisely the assimilation process and annihilation of the Native
American culture, which motivated the government to begin the
missionary programs. The authors discuss the impact of the trauma
response and unresolved grief of Native Americans due to oppression
and racism, assimilation and the annihilation of native languages and
tribal cultures. In particular, it is mentioned that Natives on
reservations and in urban locations were particularly prone to
experience the trauma responses and experience unresolved grief.
Moreover, it is suggested that as a foundation for the client-
professional relationship, the professional ought to be aware of the
traumas that may affect a person of Native American ethnicity in
order to "speed the healing process" (p61). However, I myself am not
sure if I totally agree with this sentiment based on the authors'
motivations behind the sentiment. Though, I believe it of utmost
important to recognize the reality behind the Native American
Holocaust, I do not believe it should be done in order to "speed" any
healing processes. Perhaps, the intention behind the statement is
good, but I am not sure if "speed" is a safe-term that will invoke a
proper motivation. Sometimes a McDonaldsization is not in order. If
rapidness is for the sake of convenience, it usually does not impart
a quality product. Perhaps to state it in a way that gives less room
for the de-valuing of the experience might be to promote healing, to
cultivate healing, to provide a safe-place for healing, to nurture
healing, to guide during the healing process. Though I doubt this to
be the authors' intention, sometimes less room for error is a
positive thing. In my opinion, the connotation of speed in processing
bears a remarkable resemblance to the modern day American ideologies
of quantity over quality, of numbers as opposed to people. I feel
that it is borderline dangerous to begin treatment with a client
based on a sentiment such as this, and it was precisely the authors'
opinion that the awareness of the Native American Holocaust
that "must be used as a foundation to speed the healing [process] "
(p61). Though, it is a cornerstone of understanding in regards to
cultural sensitivity and the multiplicity of possible influences that
culture has on an individual, its' recognition should be based on the
reality of its' existence alone, not on the expedition of a process
we wish to invoke. Though we need to have a means-end as
professionals in order to facilitate reasonable care within a timely
period, we cannot be guilty of making the end the means by which we
guide our professional relationships. The second possible problem I
see as a result from holding to the authors' foundation premise is
allowing for the danger of suggestion in a therapeutic relationship.
Suggesting what an individuals' problem might be and conferring power
to their personal experiences, as opposed to allowance for that
individual to explore their own experience, could be dangerous. The
danger lies within the difference between suggestibility and the
neutrality of self-exploration.

meheboob' She was hiding her 'bobobs but her eyes told a different
story - the come hither look!

and don't even talk about those Parish priests - The most degenerate
and corrupt - The church is full of them - pedophiles , sexual
perverts , with different sexual orientations , - i sometimes wonder
whether they are there to hear confessions or have their own
confessions to make!

and last but not the so called Hindu Swamis --- they can write
treatises on 'Sringara ' shatakam which would even put King
Bhatruhari to shame!At least , Bhatruhari wrote his vairagya
shatakam after shringara shatakam - but these so called sanyasis
are 'kapata' sanyasis - wearing ochre robes and carrying a
kamandalam, all they think of is how to seduce a helpless woman! The
Hare krishna movement is full of such kapata sanyasis!

Haresh is making a valid point - in societies where 'sex' is a
taboo , all kinds of Sexual promiscuities prevail - there is incest ,
rape , molestations and perversions !

The point i am trying tyo make is - celbacy is not a state of the
body ! it is a state of mind !

Krishna 78 is right - ADI SHANKARA BHAGVAEDA PADA WROTE THE AMARU
SHATAKAM after his sexual experiences in the body of a king - of
course , we hindus love to deny 'sex' and i always wonder how come
India's population is so high where the only form of entertainmkent

faced by Dominicans during the acculturation process into American

Khmer Rouge, 1975: In the year I was born, Pol Pot took control.

A sacred place, a wheel of royal power- it is Preahreachanachâk
Kampuchea. You may know it as Cambodia. Full of peaceful people of
Theravada Buddhist lineage, Kampuchea plunged into political and
social turmoil. What I did not see were the Khmer people, the
Cambodian people. What I did not witness was the genocide.

I did not see the atrocities emerge in year Zero. I did not watch was
the hand inspections, the inspection of hands that would illustrate
the difference between professional and laborer. I did not watch,
with their loved ones, the teachers and doctors being executed. I
stayed warm, swaddled in blanket, close to my mother's breast
instead.

I was born in year Zero.

And thirty-one years later, I am looking back at the painful birth of
the Cambodian people. Thirty-one years later, I witness the anguish
and torture of their traumatic birth.

At the age of two, I clung to my big sister's leg, waiting for her to
lift me up onto the counter to make a special dinner in the sink with
all the condiments we could muster, a special dinner for my dad. This
occurred while this two-year old nation tried to grasp the hundreds
of years of age, of history, of lineage, that they lost almost over
night, or--in the blink of Brahma's eye.

The Guatama was born a Hindu, and he died a Hindu. What emerged from
The Guatama's forged path was Buddhism. The Cambodians were born
Cambodians, and they died Cambodians. From their forged path as a
people, continued hopes and dreams for their future emerge.

Mirrored in the legendary symbolism of Banyan Tree are the rich
symbolism of immortality and the true meaning of life. This sentiment
the Cambodian people illustrate so well by their continued efforts
towards a restored Cambodia. Though confronted with corruption,
political unrest, poverty and the likes, the heart of the Cambodian
people continues to beat on, illustrating the resilience of humanity.

At thirty-one years of age, only having the experience of having to
seek refuge from myself and my own stupid mistakes, I cannot imagine
having to seek refuge from an ethnic cleansing, the traumas of war,
deplorable living conditions, the corpses of my loved one's bodies
laying on top of me, or any of the other atrocities inflicted upon
the average Cambodian citizen of the Pol Pot reign.

But, as a social worker- I simply must know that, "direct questioning
can trigger traumatic memories [from] the Pol Pot period, when people
were subject to interrogation as a part of 're-education' and were
often tortured and killed in if they gave the wrong answers" when I
am in a therapeutic setting with a client of Cambodian descent in
order to prevent further psychological infliction of trauma.

WOW is all I can say to that. In general, I feel everyday interaction
is so blatantly unaware of the multiplicity of influences that may
affect a single individuals actions, or inactions for that matter.
Should we do absolutely anything other than stand completely non-
judgmentally before any other human being considering that we cannot
possibly have any idea of what could be influencing them? I think we
should certainly give it our best efforts.

I wrote the above written blog on the Mckenzie-Pollock article,
moments after reading it. I felt unable to be objective enough to
write a scholarly response without first delving further into my
feelings on the materials I had just read. After further
consideration, I decided to include it in my summary brief because I
think it illustrates part of the sentiment of the article where the
authors had conveyed their own shock and disbelief resultant from
their emotional responses to actually sitting with Cambodian clients.
The authors suggested that they experienced the sessions
as "disturbing and exhausting" (294). They also noted an increase of
empathy through the sharing of the clients' unique experiences in the
therapeutic sessions. I think that what the social worker may
experience while conducting sessions with special population such as
refugees is a very serious topic to address considering the
psychological impact of what might come from counseling a client who
has quite possibly survived bewildering atrocities.

The authors suggest many wonderful considerations when dealing with
Cambodian clients. The history and culture of the Khmer people, as
well as the demographics of their relocations as refugees need to be
acknowledged initially. The family structure, the religious
affiliations, and the issues of trauma and loss, are also
considerations that the authors feel warrant close examination.
Intergenerational conflict, trust, community-wide healing, and the
mind-body connection are implied as culturally sensitive issues that
also need conscious attention. The authors provide a treatment model
that they have learned to be most effective in their years of
practice with Cambodian clients. The treatment model is for the
American professional who treats the Cambodian client with the use of
a translator. It also provides a scenario for if there is a
Professional with the same ethnicity, if one is available. I thought
the tips for dealing with a translator were very easily generalized
to any bi-lingual situation. I also thought they were fundamental
aspects to be considered. The Client-Translator-Professional model
imparts a triangular approach, which automatically makes me think to
watch for any triangulation. Though it is not the typical
triangulation model, I would imagine the same principle applies when
you have three individuals where there can be raised emotions. The
translator can affect the bond that might develop between Client-
Professional either positively or negatively. Obviously, it is in the
best interest for all if it is in a positive way.

THERE was once a big wax-candle which knew its own importance quite
well.

No wax-candle can shine like two childish eyes!

"Where shall I go now?" thought the candle; "I shall go to poor

And so the candle came to poor people, a widow with three children,
in a little, low room, right opposite the rich house.

"God bless the good lady for her gifts," said the mother, "what a
lovely candle that is! it can burn till late in the night."

"Fut, foi," it said, "what a horrid-smelling match that was she
lighted me with! the wax-candle over in the rich house would not have
such treatment offered to it."

There also the candles were lighted: they shone, out across the
street; the carriages rolled up with the elegant ball-guests and the

"Now they begin across there," the tallow-candle noticed, and thought
of the beaming face of the rich little girl, more sparkling than all
the wax-lights. "That sight I shall never see again!"

Then the smallest of the children in the poor house, a little girl,
came and took her brother and sister round the neck: she had
something very important to tell them, and it must be whispered. "To-
night we shall have just think!?To-night we shall have hot

And her face shone with happiness: the tallow-candle shone right into

that; that is to say, it spattered; a tallow-candle can do no more.

it was a perfect feast, and each one got an apple besides, and the
smallest child said the little verse:

"Thou good God, I give thanks to Thee

That Thou again bast nourished me. Amen!"

"Was that not nicely said, Mother?" broke out the little one.

"You must not ask that again," said the mother; "you must think only
of the good God who has fed you."

The little ones went to bed, got a kiss and fell asleep at once, and
the mother sat and sewed late into the night to get the means of
support for them and for herself. And over from the big house the
lights shone and the music sounded. The stars shone over all the
houses, over the rich and over the poor, equally clear and blessed.

"This has really been a delightful evening!" thought the tallow-
candle. "I wonder if the wax-candles had it any better in the silver
